Tel Aviv, Israel — Nothing brings a tear to my eye about growing up in a proud new little country that could — which I didn’t technically but that’s just details — like the song “Eretz Hadasha” by Shlomo Artzi. No matter if its being played in a continuum of classic Israeli rock, or interrupting an hour long set of house music, this song really gets everyone going — Clappety Clap Zionism Go Israel Woohoo!
The irony is that the lyrics are much more complex than that, discussing how the “enemy” to his son seems human and frightened too, and how the son may be more wise as a child than the adults around him, etc. But prior to looking up the lyrics, all I gleaned from the reaction to “Eretz Hadasha” is that its basically a de facto national anthem for Israelis.
With a name like Artzi, you automatically have to recognize his innate artistic gifts. And with a Bruce Springsteen “Born to Run”-quality hook and a beat like this you can’t deny the catchiness of this epic tune. I just can’t stop jumping up and down GO ISRAEL WOOHOO YEAH!!! NEW COUNTRY WOOHOO!!! They should play this song for Hamas; I think I just solved the Middle East problem.
