Yafo, Israel — The first time I walked into Puah, a cafe inside the Jaffa Flea Market, I was filled with awe that this was actually happening, that my two favorite things finally came together in such a beautiful way. Puah Cafe, I discovered, is the true lovechild of A&E’s show entitled Hoarders, which follows around people with a psychological disorder in which they can’t throw any of their tchotchkes or garbage out ever, and delicious snacks.

The materialist and eco-conscious parts of me together always wished I was a hoarder, living in the riches of my own life, whilst reducing my carbon footprint by never throwing anything away. But “society” has corrupted my better instincts, instructing me to live “normally” and throw away my crap and refuse. You know what, I’ve always resented that. I resent it so much that I eat my resentment in the form of tasty treats, kind of like hoarding food inside my body. Finally i have found a place that truly understands.

The exquisitely pieced together garage sale that is Puah Cafe just happens to have delectable food; 1960’s Berkeley meets quality shakshouka, chopped liver, gnocchi, cheesecake and caramelized bananas. With such a high concentration of top-notch cafes within walking distance of my apartment, I don’t normally venture this far out of my area, but Puah is a worthy destination with its ambiance and menu. The best, and in fact only thing to do when I go is bring my computer, turn it on, and press play for a classic episode of A&E’s Hoarders, really feeling for once like I’m living the dream…
